Bilingual education is becoming more and more popular among families, especially during early childhood — but it’s completely natural to have questions about how it all works. If you’re wondering whether this is the right path for your child, this post is for you!
We’ve gathered the most common questions families ask us and answered them based on our experience — and from what we see every day as children learn two languages in a fun, natural, and engaging way. Let’s dive in?
“Will my child get confused learning two languages at once?”
That’s one of the most frequent questions — and the answer is: no!
It’s normal for children to mix languages in the beginning (this is called code-switching), but it’s a natural part of the learning process. Over time, they learn when and how to use each language and build both systems confidently.
“Do I need to speak English at home too?”
No! The bilingual experience provided by the school is already enough to support your child’s language development. Of course, additional exposure at home — through songs, books, or cartoons — can enrich the process, but it’s not required.
“Will learning two languages delay my child’s speech?”
Not at all. Bilingual children follow the same developmental milestones as monolingual children. Some may take a little longer to start speaking, but they soon catch up — and eventually speak both languages fluently.
“Won’t English interfere with my child’s Portuguese?”
Quite the opposite! Bilingual children often develop stronger cognitive skills, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Exposure to two languages actually expands their vocabulary and strengthens their ability to communicate — even in their native language.
“What is a bilingual school day like?”
At Green Book, English is part of the children’s entire daily routine. They play, sing, explore, eat, and interact in English. It’s not just a class — it’s a full immersion experience where language learning happens naturally through meaningful moments.
